These five things are – 1. Tithi (Date) 2. Nakshatra (Group of stars) 3. Yoga (an auspicious moment) 4. Karan (Half of the part of Tithi) 5. Vaar (days of the week) TITHI Tithi is considered as the first phase or portion (Kala) of the 16 phases of the Moon. The 15 days, commencing from Amavasya (the last day of the dark half of a lunar month) to Purnima (Full moon), are called the Tithis of the Shukla-Paksha (brighter phase) and the days commencing from Purnima to Amavasya are called Krishna Paksha (darker phase). In Indian Astrology, the calculation of the Tithis starts from Pratipada (The first day in each half of the lunar month) of the Shukla-Paksha. They are: 1. Pratipada. 2. Dwitiya. 3. Tritiya. 4. Chaturthi. 5. Panchami. 6. Shashthi. 7. Saptami. 8. Ashtami. 9. Navami. 10. Dashami. 11. Ekadasi. 12. Dwadashi. 13. Trayodashi. 14. Chaturdashi. 15. Purnima. PANCHANG (CALENDAR) Although it is essential to have the knowledge of arithmetical calculations to understand Indian Astrology, but for the benefit of the common people, astrologers have devised a calendar (Panchang) with the help of which, and simple arithmetical calculations, one can have knowledge about planets, good or bad for him. It is not necessary for a common man to be an astrologer in order to understand the Panchanga. But for a smooth and systematic running of life, one should know how to interpret 'Phalita'. Here are listed the twelve houses with the rulerships, classification and a brief summary of the area of life depicted there: Brief description about 12 housesThe Twelve houses of the horoscope define twelve areas of our life. The beginning of each of the houses is called the cusp. Each house has what is called a natural sign and natural ruling planets. This is the sign and planet which are associated with that house in the natural chart beginning with Aries and ending with Pisces. The Astrodienst charts show another division of the houses. This division places the houses in groups that are on the angles, the angular (ang); houses that follow immediately behind each angular house, the succedent (suc) houses, and the third in line, the cadent (cad) houses. There are four each, angular, succedent, and cadent houses. Older books taught that planets in the angular houses were somewhat stronger and planets in the cadent houses were weaker in influence. Now little attention is paid to this idea. Here are listed the twelve houses with the rulerships, classification and a brief summary of the area of life depicted there: House Natural sign Planetary Ruler House Affairs 1st Aries Mars The Ascendant. Your projected behavior, temperament, health, how you react to those around you, and your appearance. 2nd Taurus Venus Your material side. Security, gains, losses, financial condition and your concern about these matters. 3rd Gemini Mercury Your mental aptitudes, early childhood, everyday communication, your sibling, and early education. 4th Cancer Moon Domestic affairs and conditions, the nurturing parent, the home, and the family life. The end of life. 5th Leo Sun Love affairs, procreation, your children, creative expression, luck and speculation. 6th Virgo Mercury The work environment, the employer and employees, the routine, health issues, hygiene. 7th Libra Venus Marriage partner, business partners, contracts, joint endeavors. 8th Scorpio Pluto Attitude toward life/death, possessions of others, wills and legacies; sex and regeneration. 9th Sagittarius Jupiter Religion, philosophy, publishing, higher learning, distant travel, foreign countries. 10th Capricorn Saturn Reputation, social status, fame or the lack of it, worldly standing, the other parent. 11th Aquarius Uranus Friends, clubs, organizations, associations, goals, hopes, and wishes 12th Pisces Neptune The subconscious mind, hidden resources, hidden problems, social responsibility. SADESATI One of the most terrible periods, according to the believers in astrology, is the dreaded 7-1/2 years of Saturn transit called "Sadesati" in North India and "Elinatishani" in South India. When the transiting Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from one's Rasi, i.e., where one's Moon is placed in the birth chart, it is called Sadesati. ( Saturn takes 30 years to make one round of the zodiac hence 2-1/2 years in each sign multiplied by 3 = 7-1/2 years). While it is true that during this 7-1/2 years Saturn transit period people do experience some tensions and troubles, it is nothing to be scared about. On an average every man has to go through at least 2 sadesatis during his life time. The results of the sadesati transit vary considerably from person to person depending on the planetary configurations in one's birth chart. Even while giving some troubles and tensions, it does not deny you success. For example when Mrs. Indira Gandhi became a Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting in 1964, she was going through her Sadesati! In January 1966 when she became Prime Minister she was still going through her Sadesati!! There are thousands of people who not only got away scot-free during sadesati, but actually prospered during it. All kinds of dreadful results are forecast by the astrologers to scare the people and apart from living under fear, people spend a lot of money quite unnecessarily on all kinds of remedies. Actually the pundits love Saturn, Mangal, Rahu and Ketu, the fearsome four names in Indian astrology, as they have given more money to them by way of remedies than the benefic like jupiter or sun! There are plenty of remedies for sadesati, the most effective being the daily reciting of Hanuman Chalisa or the Dasaratha Shani stotra. Saturn, which according to Hindu mythology is the son of Sun God, is an excellent planet. No other planet can give what Saturn can. In fact having a well placed saturn in ones chart is one of the best things to hope for! When Mrs. Indira Gandhi re-elected PM, she was going through the mahadasa of Saturn. When Amitab Bacchan was at his peak, he was also going through Saturn mahadasa. Unfortunately people and the pundits ignore the positive side of Saturn and project it only as an evil planet. Astrology Sign Compatibility Astrology is widely used as an indicator of compatibility with family, friends, bosses, or lovers, whoever you'd like to know more about. Individual natal horoscopes are compared to see how the two charts interconnect to effect the relationship. How will these two get along?
